An apple a day may do more than keep the doctor away — it can lower levels of bad cholesterol and improve levels of good cholesterol without causing weight gain in women, according to a new study.
Women who ate 75 grams of dried apples every day for six months had a 23 percent decrease in bad LDL cholesterol, said study researcher Bahram H. Arjmandi, professor and chair of the department of nutrition at the Florida State University.
Their levels of good HDL cholesterol,also increased by about 4 percent, according to the study.

Children in rural Nepal whose mothers were given iron and folic acid supplements during pregnancy were smarter, more organized and had better fine motor skills than children whose mothers did not get them, U.S. researchers said on Tuesday.
They said ensuring that pregnant women get this basic prenatal care could have a big effect on the educational futures of children who live in poor communities where iron deficiency is common.

Teenagers who take Tylenol or other acetaminophen-based drugs at least once a month are more than twice as likely to have asthma than those that do not, according to a newly published study.
The study was published online by the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, suggesting a connection between the side effects of acetaminophen and other allergic conditions such as the skin disorder eczema and allergic nasal conditions. The study was conducted by researchers who are part of the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood.
